UNHCR has assisted over 12,000 refugees to return to the Central African Republic (CAR) this year, as security improves in some areas. Refugees in neighboring countries like Cameroon are preparing for their long-awaited homecoming.
Halimatou Sadia, a 40-year-old mother, is among over 300 refugees returning after more than 10 years. She’s eager to reunite with her husband and hopes for peace so her children can go back to school.
While excited, Halimatou recalls the violence and hardships that led her family to flee. In Cameroon, they received food, shelter, and education for her children.
Although CAR has made progress with a Peace Agreement, challenges remain, including over 500,000 displaced people. UNHCR has helped more than 49,000 refugees return, with 12,000 returning this year.
The CAR government plans to bring back 300,000 refugees by 2028. UNHCR provides cash assistance and supports projects for livelihood and social cohesion. Returnees like Haouaou Halidou have reintegrated successfully, with Haouaou opening a tailoring shop in Berberati.
