The UN Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution to extend the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) until the end of October 2024, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
The resolution is asking UNSOM to work in close cooperation with the Somalian government and the African Union.
Speaking at the UNSC meeting, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative Anna Evstigneeva said that work should be intensified to implement last year’s resolution on UNSOM, including recommendations for the strategic review of its activities and the eventual handover from UNSOM to the United Nations country team.
The negotiations on the new resolution appear to have been difficult. The United Kingdom, the penholder of the document, revised the original draft text several times following objections from Russia and China.
