Angolan NOC Sonangol and global energy giant TotalEnergies have agreed to co-operate on accelerating the detection and reduction of methane and CO2 emissions, Sonangol announced on Thursday.

Under the agreement, the companies plan to deploy drone technology in joint efforts to identify, quantify and reduce methane emissions.

These efforts are aimed at reducing the carbon impact of Angola’s oil and gas sector, Sonangol said.

A pilot campaign to be launched next month in Angola’s shallow-water Block 3/05 will use Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications (AUSEA) technology developed by TotalEnergies and France’s National Centre for Scientific Research, which allows for high-precision detection and qualification of an oilfield’s methane and dioxide emissions carbon footprint.
