Gabon prepares to distribute Morocco's fertilizer donation

Gabon’s Ministry of Agriculture has announced that it will launch a campaign to distribute to Gabonese farmers the fertilizers the country has received from Morocco.

“Logistics have been put in place to transport and store the bags of fertilizer in the 9 provinces of the country,” the Gabonese ministry said in a statement, stressing it has organized training for distribution managers in partnership with OCP Group.

The partnership seeks to introduce farmers and agricultural corporations to the use of fertilizers, added the ministry’s statement.

In February this year, Morocco announced donating  2,000 tonnes of fertilizers to Gabonese farmers on the heels of a meeting between King Mohammed VI and Gabon’s President Ali Bongo Ondimba in Libreville, the Gabonese capital.

As a token of the strong bilateral ties between Libreville and Rabat, the donation aimed to once again showcase Morocco’s OCP commitment to helping fellow African countries tackle the emerging, and increasingly alarming, food concerns related to food security.

In April, President Bongo commented on Gabon-Morocco relations by extending his gratitude to King Mohammed VI for his initiatives.

“The king, my brother, your brother, our brother the king has done everything for me,” the Gabonese president said, recalling the Moroccan monarch’s decision to host the Gabonese president in Morocco for intensive medical care.

Morocco’s OCP Group has donated fertilizers to up to 20 countries across Africa. The Moroccan company has also initiated other programs to assist African farmers and start-ups in their quest for traditional and innovative solutions to face some of the continent’s most pressing challenges.

“I forgot how many, but we’ve done targeted donations in probably a good 20  countries. It’s usually a customized fertilizer,” CEO of OCP Mostafa Terrab said in a recent interview with Harvard Business School, stressing the Moroccan company’s commitment to Africa.
