The position is expressed in the final communiqué of the III Ordinary Meeting of the Political Commission of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), which took place on Friday and Saturday in Luanda, in which the party leaders addressed the political situation in the country, the diplomatic plan and the internal life of the party.

The sixth municipal elections in Mozambique are being the target of harsh criticism from different opposition parties and civil society, which denounce a “mega-fraud” in the ballot, with emphasis on the falsification of public notices, with some decisions of district courts recognizing irregularities in the process.

The main opposition party (Renamo) has been promoting marches to contest the results of the October 11 elections, bringing together thousands of people in different parts of the country to demand the “restoration of the electoral truth”.

UNITA also denounced a “wave of persecution and arbitrary arrests” of activists to discourage their participation in political life and demanded the immediate release “of all political prisoners in Luanda and other regions of the country”.

The Angolan party also expressed concern “about the daily worsening of hunger and misery of the Angolan population” and considered that the measures taken by the executive of João Lourenço (president of Angola and the MPLA, the ruling party), are “palliative, random, electioneering, unsustainable and unpatriotic”.

UNITA also decided to “mobilize national and international public opinion” to pressure the institutionalization of local authorities in Angola in 2024.

“Denounce the serious regression of the Democratic Rule of Law in Angola embodied in censorship, the exclusion of political actors in the opposition in the state media, the interference of the courts in the internal life of political parties and the persistent interference of the executive power in the bodies of the legislative and judicial powers,” the document also released today.

Internally, UNITA encouraged the party’s leadership to deepen and broaden interaction with the social partners within the framework of the broad United Patriotic Front “as a sure guarantee for the implementation of the alternation of political power in Angola in the next electoral election”.
