Parity and Elevation of Women in the Organization Among the Priorities of the Candidates for the Presidency of the IPU

Before the action plans of the four candidates for the presidency of the organization were heard, two of them, Adji Morgane and Tulia Ackson, revealed to the newspaper OPAÍS the guidelines on which their actions will be based if elected

The 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which had been taking place since the 23rd, ends today in Luanda. Senegal’s candidate for the presidency of the IPU, Adji Morgane, said she was armed with enough experience to lead the world’s largest parliamentary showcase, focusing on parity and the elevation of women in the organization.

She revealed that throughout her career as a Member of Parliament and a member of the IPU she has gained considerable experience, especially in governance at the highest level within the Inter-Parliamentary Union. “I was a member of the executive committee, a member of the finance committee and, above all, a member of the women’s cabinet,” she said, noting that these are positions with which she has gained considerable maturity.

The candidate is also the outgoing vice-president of the organization, which makes her the most eligible among the candidates. He said that he has grandiose projects on the agenda for the organization, but his main vision is to promote parliamentary diplomacy, the promotion of world peace and development. She stressed that, more than that, she is a candidate who is committed to the causes of humanity, and that she intends to hold a major conference with the participation of all Member States to address the situation of women, which is her main motto.

“A better representation of women both at the level of the IPU, as well as in the various bodies of the State apparatus,” said Adji Morgane, for whom women have always been at the centre of major decisions.

Tanzanian candidate wants IPU to be more transparent
For her part, Tanzanian candidate Tulia Ackson aims to promote a more effective, transparent and accountable IPU. Her vision as president of the organization, she said, is based on ensuring the implementation of the resolutions and decisions of the IPU, advocating for equitable resolution in national parliaments with a primary focus on women, youth and marginalized groups.

Tulia Ackson also aims to promote the effective participation and representation of geopolitical groups in the bodies of the IPU, as well as to provide leadership that contributes to a more inclusive, sustainable and peaceful world. Also running for IPU presidency are Catherine Gotani Hara of Malawi and Maria Abdibashir Hagi of Somalia.
